The short answer
Colder than most people expect. Agafay is a desert, and once the sun drops the temperature falls fast. From November to February nights are cold, and around New Year they can fall near freezing. Even in spring and autumn you want a warm layer for dinner outside. Summer nights are mild after very hot days.
In more detail
Our camp guides make the point twice: the cold catches Agafay visitors out as often as Sahara ones, because Agafay is so close to the city that people dress for a Marrakech evening. Marrakech itself drops to about 6 or 7 °C on January nights, and the open desert is colder and windier than the medina.
Our New Year notes say Agafay nights fall near freezing at the end of December, which is why the camps put heaters in tents and around the dinner area. A sunset camel ride in January is lovely in the last light and cold ten minutes later.
From June to August it is the other way round. The days are very hot and the evening is when Agafay becomes pleasant, which is why summer trips there are timed for sunset and after. In every season, carry a jumper or fleece in the car.
Good to know
- November to February: warm jacket, hat, closed shoes.
- Spring and autumn: a fleece for after sunset.
- Summer: go late in the day and bring water.
