The short answer

Only if you are leaving the city and are comfortable with demanding roads. You do not need a car in Marrakech itself: the medina is car-free in practice and taxis cover the rest. The motorways north are good, but the Atlas passes, medina parking and police checkpoints are where self-drive gets hard.

In more detail

The toll motorways linking Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Tangier have a smooth surface and clear signs. Off them, the national roads south and east are sealed and mostly sound but narrow. Provincial roads can break up after rain, and the unpaved pistes need a high-clearance 4x4.

Parking is the hidden cost in time. You leave the car in a supervised car park outside the medina walls and walk in, so every city stop means a car park, a guardian and a walk with your bags.

We arrange private drivers for a living, so we are not neutral. But the reasons guests give for switching are consistent: the passes were more nerve-wracking than expected, parking ate hours, and they watched the road instead of the landscape. If you do self-drive, never drive after dark outside the cities.

Good to know

  • Take full collision damage and theft cover; read the small print with local agencies.
  • Download offline maps; signal drops in the mountains and desert.
  • Fill up whenever the tank drops below half east of Ouarzazate.
