The short answer

120 km/h on the motorways, 100 km/h on open roads, and 40 to 60 km/h in towns. Fixed speed cameras are common, and officers also use radar at checkpoints. Fines are settled on the spot. Road signs follow the familiar European shapes and symbols, so they are easy to read.

In more detail

The motorway figure applies to the toll autoroutes, such as the A7 between Marrakech and Casablanca or Agadir. The national roads into the mountains and the south are often slower in practice than their limit, because of bends, lorries and villages.

Town limits change quickly as you pass through villages, and speed bumps can appear without much warning. Slow down early on entering any built-up area.

Most of the risk is not speed itself but conditions: unlit mopeds, livestock on the road and tiredness on long days. That is why the strongest rule is to finish your driving before dark.

Fines are paid in cash on the spot, so keep some local currency in the car, and ask for a receipt: 'un reçu, s'il vous plaît'. With a private driver, none of this is your concern.

Good to know

  • Expect lower limits through every village on the N9.
  • Expect radar at checkpoints on the edge of towns.
  • Plan long legs to end before sunset.
