The short answer

Maroc Telecom (IAM) has the widest rural and desert coverage, so it is the one to choose if your trip goes into the High Atlas or the south. Orange is strong in the cities. Inwi is competitive in town but shows more gaps in the countryside. Whichever you pick, 4G is fast across Marrakech and the main roads.

In more detail

Morocco has three national networks, and every local SIM or travel eSIM runs on one of them. The difference barely shows in Marrakech, Fes or Casablanca. It shows on the day trips and the long routes: high on the Atlas passes above Ourika and Imlil, on the back tracks of the Agafay, and on the road to Merzouga.

If you buy a travel eSIM, check which network the provider partners with before you pay. Plans routed through Maroc Telecom give the most reliable signal once you leave the tarmac; Inwi-based plans can be cheaper but drop out more in the far south. A local physical SIM, sold at the desks in Marrakech arrivals and at operator shops in Gueliz, lets you choose the network directly. Bring your passport to register it.

No network covers everything. Expect the signal to fade on the highest passes and at desert camps, many of which pick up a bar only at the edge of the dunes. Download what you need before you leave the city.

Good to know

  • Download an offline map of the medina before you arrive.
  • Your phone must be unlocked to use a foreign SIM or eSIM.
  • Tell your driver if you need signal at a set time; they know the dead zones.
