How do you manage long drives in Morocco with children?

Split them.

The short answer

Split them. Merzouga, the main Sahara gateway, is about 8 hours 30 minutes (560 km) of driving from Marrakech, so with children we break it over two days each way with a night in Ouarzazate or the Dades. Keep other legs under about five hours, stop often, pack snacks the children already know, and use a private car so you control every stop.

In more detail

The roads out of Marrakech are beautiful and long. Ouarzazate is about 4 hours away over the hairpins of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and Aït Ben Haddou about 3 hours 45 minutes. The Sahara at Erg Chebbi is a full day beyond that. A well-paced family loop keeps every transfer to five hours or less and puts a pool at the end of each one.

A private car makes the difference. You decide when to stop for food, a toilet, a view or a child who simply needs to get out. The Atlas roads have few shops, so carry familiar snacks, water, wipes, a change of clothes and anything for car sickness. Bottled water and snacks are on board all our trips, but children's favourites are worth packing.

If a multi-day drive is too much, change the desert. The Agafay camps sit about 40 minutes (30 km) from the medina, so you get the camel, the open stony hills and the campfire without the long road. The Ourika Valley is about 1 hour 15 minutes south to Setti Fatma for a river day.

Tell us the children's ages and we will shape the route, add the overnight stops and arrange child seats.

Good to know

  • Break the Sahara drive over two days each way.
  • Keep each driving day under about five hours.
  • Pack familiar snacks and a change of clothes.
  • Choose Agafay if the Sahara is too far for this trip.
